Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is one of the largest food banks in the nation, providing nutritious food to over a quarter of a million people each month.
Second Harvest Food Bank has a flyer describing opportunities for children any age to volunteer -- things like assembling food bags for families in need, collecting and decorating large brown grocery bags, or making colorful handmade cards for seniors and families.
Second Harvest offers warehouse food-sorting volunteer opportunities. Volunteers inspect and categorize donated food products (such as dry goods and produce) and bag, box, or repack to prepare for distribution. Training is provided at the beginning of each shift. Shifts are 3 hours in length.
Dates: Various days in November and December
Ages: Volunteers must be ages 14 and older. Youth ages 14 through 15 must be accompanied by one adult (over the age of 21) for every five youth. Volunteer groups with youth ages 16 through 17 must be accompanied by one adult (over the age of 21) for every 10 youth.
Length of shifts: 2 or 3 hours

Turkey Trot Volunteering
Second Harvest Food Bank also needs volunteers to help out at the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot. Help is needed for pre-race registration days as well as on the day of the race:
- Race Day (November 24, 2016) SAP Center in downtown San Jose
- Expo Days (November 18-23, 2016) at Sports Basement - Sunnyvale location
